HIFU Procedure

What is a HIFU Procedure?
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound waves to generate heat and destroy targeted cancerous tissue. It is primarily used for prostate cancer but is also being explored for other urological conditions.
This can be done as an outpatient procedure.
How does HIFU work?
- High-frequency ultrasound waves are precisely focused on a small area of tissue.
- The energy heats and destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
- The procedure is guided using real-time imaging, such as MRI or ultrasound.
- Since HIFU does not involve surgery or radiation, recovery time is typically faster.
What are the benefits of HIFU?
- Targeted therapy – focusing on certain areas.
- Reduced side effects – lower risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction compared to traditional treatments.
- Minimally invasive – no radiation or incisions on the body.
- Quick recovery
Potential Side Effects and Risks
- Urinary Incontinence
- Forming Scar Tissue
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Mild burning, frequent urination or urgency
HIFU is not for all patients. Please consult your uro-oncologist to determine if you are a candidate.
